Fall Is in the air

Fall is in the air again, and that means football, leaves and rain. It also means it is the best time to get outdoor chores done since it is cool enough to labor all day and the insects of summer are mostly gone along with the ever present threat of sunburn. It is time to cut firewood for next year and to split rail for fixing fences. No wait, that is way too much work.

Cedar split rail is what we do at Mill Outlet. 2 Rails high, 3 Rails high, standard weight and pony weight, always thousands of feet on hand, enough for any project.

 

We stock through mortised line posts, blind mortised end posts and 90 degree mortised corner posts, all are the same price

We stock 8′ , and if you need to purchase individual components we can sell that way as well.

And on orders over 100′ we throw in 1 post for free to end the run.

Weekend Warriors

Some people build a deck on the weekend, or a fence, or a backyard shed. Some do nothing, or watch sports or read a book. Not at Mill Outlet Lumber. This Saturday we spent the day building new stand up lumber rack, to better store and organize our fine cedar lumber.

So many options

Every day it seems we have more and more options in cedar products. All sorts of vertical grain clear cedar from 1×2- 2×12 at ridiculously affordable prices. Now most recently we are bringing on a constant supply of appearance cedar timbers in 4×4, 4×6 and 6×6 for now with more sizes on the way. These timbers are all full dimension rough sawn and old growth high quality material. In the same type of lumber we also now have 2×8, 2×10 and 2×12, mainly in 12′ and shorter lengths.

Flooding Torments South Tacoma

It appears as if the tide has risen really high today at Mill Outlet Lumber at 4811 South Tyler St in South Tacoma. The weather forecasters were not kidding when they predicted Saturday 9/28 to be the first major drenching of the season. In a earlier surge of rainfall the office was actually cut off from the outside world for a time.

And it was only 10:00 am with torrents of rain and high winds predicted for the remainder of the day. “What if it gets so deep that the office floats away” said Bridget, the office manager here.

Across the yard there appears to be a reservoir filling to the brim, reinforcing images of flash flooding and carnage.

Needless to say, there are not a lot of customers braving the storm to purchase lumber. But who knows, if this keeps up we may have a rush on ark materials, which, by the way is our escape plan, ride a unit of appearance grade timbers to safety.

Fasteners are important

While we do not carry a wide assortment of fasteners at Mill Outlet, we do try to make careful choices about what we do carry.First of all we carry bronze ceramic coated screws in a variety of sizes. 1 5/8 Trim head for attaching fence boards, 2 1/2″ and 3″ Trim head for fastening either 1″ or 1 1/2″ deck boards. In addition to being bronze ceramic coated these screws are also “Star Drive” which eliminates spin out and reduces the amount of pressure required while driving screws. The small trim head nearly disappears when driven beneath the surface of a board and the coating is compatible with corrosive pressure treated lumber.

It doesn’t stop there since we also offer a line up of standard headed screws in 2 1/2″, 3″ and 4″. These can be used for any sort of construction purposes that requires an easy to drive, strong and corrosion resistant fastener.

All of these Bronze ceramic coated screws are available in handy reusable 1#, 5# buckets and bulk containers for larger jobs.

On another completely different note we also stock a complete line of the Camo hidden  fastening system. This is a combination of ideas I wish I had thought of. It begins with the Camo tool which positions the screw angle perfectly every time while spacing the boards as well. The screws have a unique chisel point which drills through the deck board instead of splitting its way. These screws also Have locking reverse threads at the top and nearly invisible trim heads that are driven by a tiny star drive bit. They are Ceramic coated or for maximum longevity stainless steel with a black coating for camouflage.
